All Surgical Nurses should attend this class in preparation to caring for surgical patients.
Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the successful participant will be able to:

Demonstrate care of patient in traction.

Demonstrate ambulation, DVT prevention, range-of-motion.

Discuss care of surgical dressings and drains.
-
Identify vital signs to monitor during immediate post-op period.
-
Discuss care of patient receiving blood transfusions and autotransfusions.
-
Define care of patient with foley catheters and ostomies.
-
List affected lab values to monitor during post-op care (i.e. CBC, lytes, PT, PTT).
-
Distinguish care of patient with diabetes.
-
Identify care of surgical patient with pain and nausea/vomiting.
Program Prerequisites:
Adult/Respiratory Assessment Class
The participant should have a basic understanding of vital sign monitoring, oxygen therapy, chest tube management, neurological assessment, and nasogastric suctioning/feeding.
Program Credit:
Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing for 8.0 hours, BRN Provider Number 1384. No partial credit will be given.
Although the Board of Registered Nursing does not approve individual continuing education courses, providers are required by law to be approved by the Board. Complaints regarding continuing education providers or continuing education courses should be addressed to the Board.
