Our Departments:
Blood Bank
Henry Mayo stores donor blood in our blood bank facility, allowing access to life-saving supplies for trauma patients and other patients needing blood transfusions. Blood products are cross-matched to the patient by skilled laboratory scientists, ensuring a safe transfusion.
Microbiology
Bacterial and fungal organisms are isolated from various body sites through blood, urine, and wound samples. These organisms are then identified and analyzed to help the physician determine the most effective antibiotics to prescribe for their patients.
Point of Care
Some clinical laboratory testing is performed closer the patient. Examples of these tests are glucose, urinalysis, and pregnancy testing. Near-patient testing allows the clinicians and caregivers to receive very prompt results and enables them to make treatment decisions more quickly.
Staff
Laboratory services director Jonathan Miller, MPH, CLS, MT (ASCP) oversees a top-notch staff including a core of 20 Clinical Laboratory Scientists licensed by the State of California to run and report results of blood testing. Our Laboratory Technician Assistants who are responsible for drawing and preparing blood for analysis are also licensed by the state of California as Certified Phlebotomy Technicians.
The hospital laboratory is fortunate to have access to exemplary Pathologists who serve as our Medical Directors. Barbara Florentine, M.D., RN, ASC, medical director of pathology, is a board-certified Pathologist with a cytopathology subspecialty certification and is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pathology at USC Medical Center. Roger Der, M.D., M.B.A, associate medical director of pathology, is a voluntary faculty member of LAC+USC Medical Center and has co-authored several scientific papers on the subject of reflux disease and esophageal cancer.
