During a special preview on August 6, 2009, staff, physicians, and volunteers celebrated the completion of Henry Mayo’s new Roberta G. Veloz Cardiac Cath Lab, featuring the latest diagnostic tools and technology.
Located on the second floor of the hospital (in space previously occupied by the pharmacy), Henry Mayo’s new cardiac cath lab encompasses 4,715 square feet, which includes the procedure room, prep room, two recovery bays, waiting area, consultation room, two exam rooms, as well as offices and other support space.
“I can’t believe this is the same space,” said Dele Akao, pharmacist. “This is absolutely beautiful.”
During tours, the cardiac cath lab team proudly showed off their new lab and answered questions about equipment and procedures.
“We’ve invested in the latest medical technology and we have highly qualified staff and physicians,” said Bea Edmonson, RN, MSN, director of Surgery and Cardiac Cath Services. “Once again, this demonstrates our commitment to providing the best level of care possible to our community.”
The lab houses state-of-the-art Allura Xper FD10 x-ray equipment that delivers superb image sharpness and quality of even the smallest coronary vessels with minimum patient radiation exposure—aiding in diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. The Philips Calysto Series IV monitoring system includes a seamless network for staff and physicians in providing detailed procedural data and reporting from admit to discharge.
Cardiac catheterization is a vital tool in diagnosing diseases of the heart, including the coronary arteries and heart valves. Henry Mayo’s state-of-the-art imaging equipment is capable of offering unprecedented views of the heart to identify potential coronary artery blockages that could cause heart attacks and other serious cardiovascular damage.
Using catheters, cardiologists can determine, with the aid of imaging fluids and x-ray technology, where a blockage may be located. This diagnostic study is considered the gold standard for identifying blockages to the heart.
“Developing the hospital’s services in response to community need is an important part of our mission,” said Roger Seaver, president and CEO of Henry Mayo. “Thanks to the overwhelmingly generous donations by Roberta Veloz, our patients will have access to the most advanced technology available for cardiac diagnostic procedures in a beautiful, comfortable environment.”
Roberta G. Veloz, a long-time resident of the Santa Clarita Valley, donated more than $4 million dollars to Henry Mayo for the cardiac cath lab and the emergency department expansion. Roberta’s generosity, and the gifts from many others—including members of our hospital family–ensure that Henry Mayo will continue to serve the ongoing healthcare needs for each of us, our families, and all those who enter Henry Mayo’s doors.
“Our success can be attributed to the many individuals who diligently worked together to accomplish this goal,” said John Schleif, senior vice president and COO. “Special thanks for their many hours and commitment to this project go to Connie Hage, radiology director, Bea Edmondson, surgery and cardiac cath services director, Ken Cappella, cath lab supervisor, Bob Knoblauch, facilities director, and Kenneth Tam, MD, medical director of cardiac cath lab.”
