In recognition of National Fall Prevention Day, Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital will host a free Fall Prevention Fair on September 23, 2011, which also happens to be the first day of Fall, from 9 to 11 a.m., at the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center.

Falls are the leading cause of injuries in seniors over the age of 65. The fair will provide participants an opportunity to explore the many factors that may contribute to their risk of falling and will include a number of balance activities and fall prevention strategies.

Free health screenings will also be available, including blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol, along with valuable safety and health information, and an opportunity to discuss medications with a hospital pharmacist.

According to the National Resource Center for Safe Aging, one out of three seniors will fall this year and falls are the major contributing factor to 40% of all nursing home admissions. The Fall Prevention Fair is a great opportunity to spread awareness and educate the public about preventing accidental falls.
