A gavel was passed to familiar hands as Estelle Hoffman was sworn in for a second term as president of the Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
"We thank you for your first year of service and the wonderful accomplishments, and we know you're going to make the Auxiliary an even more distinguished organization this year," said Diana Vose, president of the Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Health Foundation.
Hoffman was excited about leading the Auxiliary once more in 2011. "I believe in having a smile on your face, a hand out to help, and an ear to listen," she said. "I'm looking forward to all our plans and projects we'll be working on together in the upcoming year to help Henry Mayo achieve its goals and continue meeting our community's healthcare needs."
In addition to Hoffman, Vose also installed the remaining 2011 board members, including first vice president Denise Baldwin, second vice president Thomas Llewellyn, recording secretary Julie Cobb, corresponding secretary Gayle Jenest and treasurer Warren Bell.
The all-volunteer organization, now in its 49th year, raises funds for the Henry Mayo Health Foundation through the gift shop and outside vendor sales. In 2010, the Auxiliary presented the Foundation with a check for more than $60,000 during the hospital's annual volunteer recognition luncheon.
Henry Mayo's Auxiliary also staffs popular programs at the hospital, such as the Parent Preview tour and Tyke Hike. On Christmas Day, Auxiliary members delight parents by delivering newborns to the mom's room wrapped in a Christmas stocking, and present the first baby of the New Year with a gift.
Carol Ann Satterthwaite of Valencia, a retired medical office manager, joined the Auxiliary five years ago.
"I was interested in volunteering at the hospital for several years, and once I saw the available opportunities, I decided to be a part of the patient relations program, which was just starting up," she said.
Satterthwaite also enjoys the social interaction of the Auxiliary and its more than 115 members.
"We get to meet a variety of people, from all walks of life. We all have a story," she said. "It's about meeting people, which can be hard to do when you get to be my age. Here, we get to have fun and make friends, and at the same time support the hospital."
Following the formal officer installation, Hoffman introduced the 2011 Auxiliary chairpersons Angie Mariucci and Carol Jones, gift shop; Linda Palacios, historian; Richard Stubbs, legislative; Rose Stoffer, luncheons; Carol Jones, newsletter; Lucille Alosi, opportunity drawings; Kay Moioffer, Parent Preview; Judy Peterson, parliamentarian; Dorothy Hayes, tours; and, Anita Sheidenberger, Tyke Hike.
