Jeannette Sharar Definitive Observation Unit
The Definitive Observation Unit (DOU) is a unit that provides the second-highest level of care. Patients may be admitted directly to DOU when they arrive at the hospital or they may be transferred into DOU from a unit that provides a lower level of care or from the Intensive Care Unit.
DOU is staffed by a specialized, multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals including nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, social workers, physical therapists and occupational therapists who provide around the clock individualized care for patients. Physicians and staff conduct multidisciplinary team rounds on each patient daily. Patients may have a variety of health conditions, such as but not limited to trauma, surgical, and cardiac conditions. Some patients may be pediatric. Pediatric intensivists are on call 24/7. All DOU nurses have pediatric life support training and many of them are nationally certified in critical care.
