New "First" for the Roberta G. Veloz Cardiac Cath Lab Team
Recently, Henry Mayo interventional cardiologist Muhammad Shuaib, MD, along with the Roberta G. Veloz Cardiac Cath Lab team, became one of the first in Los Angeles County to treat a patient using the AGENT™ Drug-Coated Balloon. This advancement shows our commitment to offering innovative treatments and improving patient care in the field of interventional cardiology.
The AGENT™ Drug-Coated Balloon is used in the treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD). It is designed to deliver a drug directly to the site of a narrowing or blockage in the coronary arteries during a procedure known as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or angioplasty.
The procedure involves inserting a catheter with a deflated balloon into the blocked artery. The balloon is then inflated to compress the plaque against the artery walls, which widens the artery and restores blood flow. In the case of the AGENT™ Drug-Coated Balloon, the balloon surface is coated with a medication that is released into the artery walls during inflation. This drug helps to reduce the chance of the artery narrowing again (restenosis) by inhibiting cell growth and inflammation.
The benefits of using a drug-coated balloon like AGENT™ include potentially lower rates of restenosis compared to traditional angioplasty procedures where a bare balloon is used. This can lead to improved long-term outcomes for patients by reducing the need for repeat procedures.
