Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy focuses on the development or adaptation of the skills needed for everyday living. Occupational Therapists (OTs) provide targeted therapy to address the barriers that patients face in resuming activities that are meaningful to them, whether they be dressing, grooming, home management, returning to work, or resuming a favorite hobby. Occupational Therapists are experts in task analysis and are specially trained to determine physical, sensory, and cognitive demands of an activity. OT interventions may include: activity modification, adaptive equipment training, caregiver education and training, neuromuscular re-education, sensory regulation, cognitive retraining, and more. Engagement in meaningful activity is both the goal of therapy and the means by which therapy is administered.
Outpatient Neurological Rehabilitation
Occupational Therapists in our Neurological Rehabilitation program specialize in the treatment of patients who face life challenges as a result of stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s Disease, or other neurological disorders. Therapy goals focus on engagement in basic Activities of Daily Living (ADL) such as feeding, grooming, dressing, and functional transfers.
Goals may also involve more complex, Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) including home management, use of technology, transportation, and return to work skills. Patients who present with deficits in upper extremity function due to neurological impairment may benefit from handling techniques such as Neuro-developmental Treatment (NDT) and Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF), or the use of electrical stimulation technology such as the Bioness H200. OTs also provide specific assessment and training for cognitive, visual perceptual, and general vision skills which may impact ADL and IADL performance.
Patients in our Outpatient Neurological Rehabilitation program have the benefit of an interdisciplinary approach, as Speech and Physical Therapy are offered within the same clinical setting. In addition to two therapy gymnasiums, the Outpatient Neurological Rehabilitation treatment area features a fully functional kitchen and a simulated apartment for patients to learn and practice daily life skills in a realistic environment. Worksite Assessments
To improve recovery and prevent future injuries, we have staff trained in ergonomics and job station modification. By visiting the individual’s work site, we can assess current work station set-ups and recommend changes to avoid or minimize future injuries. We can also provide on site training and education for the prevention of musculo-skeletal injuries.
