Frequently Asked Questions

How do I schedule my appointments?

Schedule your initial appointment by calling one of our three outpatient clinics. When you provide information related to your diagnosis or medical concern, our office staff will assist you by directing your call to the appropriate clinical location for treatment.

Subsequent appointments may be scheduled after your initial evaluation. Your therapist will recommend the frequency and duration of visits to optimize your rehabilitation goals.

We offer flexible appointment hours to meet your needs. We will do our best to accommodate work, school, and transportation schedules as well as child or elder care constraints.

How should I dress for therapy?

Wear supportive footwear and loose, comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement. Clothing should allow therapists easy access to any affected body part. Public restrooms are available.

Where can I park my car?

Free parking is available and adjacent to each of our Outpatient Therapy clinics. Please contact the front office staff for assistance or to obtain a map.

When should I arrive?

Plan on arriving 30 minutes prior to your initial appointment in order to complete all necessary paperwork. If you have trouble writing, cognitive impairments or communication difficulties, bringing a caregiver or family member is recommended. Arriving 5-10 minutes before subsequent visits is advised.

What should I bring to my initial visit?

Please have available the following:

  • Physician’s prescription for therapy
  • Driver’s license or Valid I.D.
  • Insurance cards
  • Copies of your recent medical history, surgical reports, or related test results (X-ray, MRI, etc.)
  • A list of your current medications (dosages and frequency)
  • If you are covered by Worker’s Compensation, provide your claim number and contact information for your Case Manager

What can I expect during my first visit?

Your first visit will last approximately 60 minutes. You will meet with a physical, occupational, or speech therapist for an initial evaluation and to discuss your goals for therapy. The therapist will review your medical history, gather information about your previous abilities, and perform various assessments of your current functional status. You will be asked to report any sources of pain and to describe any difficulties with carrying out daily activities. The therapist may want to know if you have any special equipment at home or if you have participated in other types of therapy in the past.

The therapist will help you identify areas to be addressed through skilled therapeutic intervention and develop an individualized treatment plan that is tailored to meet your specific needs. This plan is created with input from you, your physician, and often your family members. The plan will include goals and expectations, time frames, and home exercises/activities to support your outpatient therapy program. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and express concerns throughout this process.

Can a family member be present during my therapy visits?

We welcome your family or caregivers to participate in therapy visits. This may be especially beneficial if you have cognitive or communication difficulties. Having someone attend therapy visits with you may help you to understand or recall information more readily. Family or caregiver involvement may be crucial for some treatment plans and will facilitate carryover from the clinic to the home setting.

After you check in at the front desk, your licensed therapist will begin to lead you through your therapy routine. Our healing process begins with a very personal, one-on-one approach. We take this dedicated therapist approach because we know the importance of individualized care for successful rehabilitation. Providing individualized care allows the therapist to monitor your progress and modify our plan of care as needed throughout your recovery.

How long will my appointment last?

Expect your initial visit to last approximately 60 minutes. Subsequent visits will vary in length, depending upon your plan of care.

What will be the frequency and duration of treatment?

Once the initial evaluation is completed, the therapist will discuss treatment plan recommendations for how often and how long you will be participating in outpatient therapy. This will depend upon several factors, including your personal goals, your past medical history, the nature of your injury/deficits (location, severity, etc.), the expected outcomes, and the physician’s prescription. It may also depend in part, on your insurance coverage. Your therapy program will be monitored closely, with periodic re-assessments. New goals and time frames may be established. The therapist will discuss your progress and share plans for ongoing therapy or recommendations for discharge from outpatient therapy.

How do I pay for therapy visits?

Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital is contracted with most insurance companies. As a courtesy, we will verify your insurance benefits and work with you to schedule therapy visits to maximize your coverage. Some insurance plans have deductible or co-insurance requirements, or may require a co-payment at the time of service. We highly recommend that you contact your insurance carrier directly to clarify the details of your individual plan.

How do I cancel or reschedule my appointment?

Call the front office as soon as possible to cancel or reschedule a therapy appointment. We require a minimum of 24 hours notice for missed appointments.

Will I work with a licensed therapist?

Our Physical Therapists (PTs), Physical Therapist Assistants (PTAs), Occupational Therapists (OTs), Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTAs), and Speech Language Pathologists/Therapists (SLP) are all licensed in the state of California.
