Speech Therapy
Speech Therapy is a multi-faceted discipline that focuses on rehabilitating a patient’s ability to communicate, improve cognitive skills (ex. attention, memory, reasoning, problem solving), and facilitate a safe swallow to reduce the risk of medical complications. Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) are experienced in helping individuals address these difficulties that sometimes occur as a result of illness, injury, or surgical procedure.
Our Speech Therapy department can help a range of patient illnesses and injuries including but not limited to;
- Stroke
- Brain injury
- Parkinson's disease
- Respiratory failure
- Head/neck
- Cardiothoracic surgery
- Progressive neurological diseases
Neurological Rehabilitation
Speech-Language Pathologists in our Neurological Rehabilitation program specialize in the treatment of patients who face life challenges as a result of stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, or other neurological disorders. Therapy goals focus on re-establishing meaningful communication (either verbally or through other means), improved cognition (to aid in independent self management), and the ability to swallow safely.
Video Fluoroscopic Swallow Study
Henry Mayo’s Speech-Language Pathologists specialize in conducting Video Fluoroscopic Swallowing Studies (also known as a “Modified Barium Swallow Study” or “Cine Esophagram” by other medical providers). This study is a useful tool in assessing the severity and precise location of a patient’s swallowing disorder (also known as “dysphagia”).
The Video Fluoroscopic Swallowing Study is a non-invasive and can be completed on an inpatient or outpatient basis. The total time from check in to completion is generally 60 to 90 minutes. It is conducted in collaboration with the Radiology Department.
Vital Stim Dysphagia Therapy
Vital Stim is a therapeutic modality that uses neuromuscular electrical stimulation to strengthen a patient’s swallow to reduce or eliminate swallowing difficulties (also known as “dysphagia”). Vistal Stim can only be provided by a Speech-Language Pathologist who is certified to utilize this equipment.
Voice Therapy
The Speech-Language Pathologists at Henry Mayo work in close collaboration with Otolaryngologists and Neurologists to restore power, clarity, and confidence in a patient’s affected voice (also known as dysphonia).
