Henry Mayo Acquires World's Smallest Heart Pump

The Impella®, the world's smallest heart pump, is a temporary device that assists the heart in pumping blood to the body’s vital organs, allowing the heart to rest and potentially recover.  Impella® heart pumps are approved by the Food and Drug Administration to provide treatment during high-risk Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) procedures, and in the emergent treatment of cardiogenic shock, a condition that typically occurs during or after a heart attack.

“The Impella® heart pump allows us to expand the lifesaving treatments we offer here,” said Rosella Dolan, RN, Cardiovascular Services nurse navigator at Henry Mayo.  “We are very pleased to have this technology available for our patients.”

The Impella® platform of products were developed by Abiomed Inc., based in Danvers, Massachusetts.
