Athletic Trainer Program in Partnership with Hart District

Thousands of student athletes each year compete in a variety of sports in the William S. Hart Union High School District. By the very nature of competing in sports, every single one of these children are at risk of being injured. On average, in the state of California, only about 20 percent of schools have an athletic trainer who is on site daily to address the needs of the students and provide medical care in cases of injuries. This is not the case in the Hart District, thanks to the Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Outreach Athletic Trainer Program.

In 2016 a partnership officially launched between the Hart District and the Hospital – to provide athletic training services to all of their student athletes in the school district. The Athletic Trainer Program provides the highest quality injury prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation services for all the student athletes of our community.

We strive to provide the student athletes with access to an evidence based healthcare collaboration from acute recognition, immediate management and stabilization, referral by certified athletic training staff to the programs preferred medical providers, access to formal rehabilitation with expert physical therapy staff along with implementation of the most current return to play guidelines, and to ensure optimal return to sports participation with the lowest relative risk for re-injury. To reduce student athletes risk of injury, Outreach Athletic Trainer Program also offers educational resources and preventive programs tailored to specific sports.

In addition to providing athletic trainers to William S. Hart Union High School District, our Outpatient Physical Therapy Service Team offers free sports injury screening clinics to all athletes. These 30-minute injury screenings are provided by licensed physical therapists and can provide immediate assessments, including any recommendations for follow-up care. We are bridging the gap between physical therapy and sports medicine rehabilitation with the primary goal of returning all athletes to their sports with improved performance.

We recently received this feedback from the Hart School District:

“The William S. Hart Union High School District wanted to reach out and personally thank Patrick Godines from Henry Mayo, who is an Athletic Trainer at Golden Valley. He quickly identified that a football player on the opposing team was wobbly after getting up after a play. Patrick asked the Referee for an Athletic Trainer timeout and went to evaluate the player. He notified all of the training staff that he suspected the player suffered a concussion. This player did end up leaving the game and being admitted to the hospital with concussion symptoms. The player is doing much better and we are thankful for the awareness that Patrick and the AT bring to our sports teams.”

Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital is proud to provide world-class athletic trainers to our student athletes in the Santa Clarita Valley. Giving to Henry Mayo enables our team to enhance our community programs and provide advanced and innovative healthcare to address the needs of our community. We appreciate your generosity and continued support.
