Deva Metz - A Thank You to the Emergency Department Staff

Deva Metz keeps Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, its staff and physicians, near and dear to her heart.

On August 31at approximately 3:30 a.m., Deva arrived at Henry Mayo's Emergency Department having problems breathing, and spitting up blood from a burst ulcer, which was complicated by an accidental drug overdose. After arriving in the ED, Deva stopped breathing, slipped into a coma and had to be ventilated. It was three days until she woke up.

“How do you thank a hospital, doctor and medical team that not only saves your life, but gives it back to you with a clean slate? You can't. But I must say thank you. Thank you Dr. Lall and your staff in the ER for not giving up on me. Thank you to all the people I don't remember but have been told about in ICU, especially the nurse with the Wings music. Thank you to all the staff on the second floor. You endured a lot in those early days after I awoke. Then you nurtured me back to health well enough to go home on September 10. And a big warm thank you to Amy on the first floor. She became my champion to get me out that door. Thank you Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital for having such an incredible staff under one medical roof.”

Deva’s treatment continues even after her discharge. She is seeing a pain specialist at Henry Mayo and was also provided with resources and programs available in the community.

“You guys are still helping me, even after I got back home,” Deva said. “This has been a life-changing experience for me and my family. I’m hoping to soon get strong enough to discuss volunteering there.”
