Education Center
At Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, we believe that by investing in the education of our staff, physicians and local residents and giving them the tools they need to make optimum healthcare and medical decisions, we all benefit.
The Education Center at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital informs and empowers patients, families, community members and hospital staff by providing accurate health information and connecting them to appropriate hospital and community services and programs.
Designed as a 10,280 square-foot state-of-the art facility, Henry Mayo’ s Education Center provides the environment, resources, technology, staff and curricula to deliver coordinated education programs to patients and families, nursing staff, employees, volunteers, physicians, and members of Santa Clarita Valley community.
When Was It Built?
Completed in 2014, the new Education Center is located on the first floor of the Henry Mayo Center facing McBean Parkway and adjacent to the parking structure. It includes one 116-seat conference room divisible into two 48-seat rooms, two 40-seat conference rooms and a simulation suite for nurse education.
Who Does It Serve?
To patients and families, the Education Center provides a variety of classes and consultations, including pre-surgery education and pain management education.
To members of the community, the Center provides an array of education services ranging from disease prevention education classes, health fairs and screening events to seminars and support groups, which benefit local residents of all ages. The Center is a home to classes and support groups (such as Labor of Love, etc).
For members of Henry Mayo’s highly trained and experienced medical staff, the Education Center provides regular continuing medical education programs that are scientifically supported, relevant to their practices, and current in topic.
To the hospital clinical and non-clinical staff, the Center provides nationally recognized leadership training, regular and practical hands-on training for new medical technologies, critical thinking, and training for basic software applications. Continuing staff education, in-service education, new employee and volunteer orientations, leadership development training and other classes are held at the Education Center.
What Education Technologies Does It Have?
The Education Center incorporates the most current technology, including a simulation suite that will provide nursing staff with case scenarios related to their practice and patient demographics. Through the use of didactic presentations, computer based learning and high-fidelity human patient simulators (manikins that talk, breath, have heart sounds, blood pressures, etc.), participants are provided with education that meets adult learning needs in a non-threatening, controlled environment. Additionally, participants are afforded the opportunity to implement best nursing practices, enhance critical thinking skills, and practice the aforementioned in an environment that does not place a patient at risk.
The implementation of a high technology Education Center and simulation suite have enabled Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital to provide a patient-centric environment with a focus on safety and quality care. Development of a simulation suite within the Education Center allows for staff to move from novice to practitioner in an environment that is conducive to adult learning needs while maintaining the safety of patients during the training period.
