From Capturing Smiles to Saving Lives: How a Local Entrepreneur Turned a Stroke Scare into a Mission of Awareness and Gratitude
At every Foundation event, Kathy Alkaraghouli, the owner of Fun Times Captured Photobooth, is a beacon of joy. Her business has become synonymous with infectious laughter and lasting memories, as she captures the brightest smiles of everyone who attends. Kathy’s presence at these events is more than just professional; it’s personal. She has a special way of bringing out the best in people, making each photograph a treasured moment. But last year, in the midst of her busy schedule, Kathy started to feel strange and unsteady. At first, she dismissed it, attributing the strange sensation to exhaustion from working long hours. Little did she know, she was experiencing the onset of a stroke. These minor symptoms could have easily been dismissed but she went to the Emergency Department at Henry Mayo even though her symptoms felt minor.
Thanks to the swift action and expert care at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, Kathy’s life was saved. Initially in disbelief, she could hardly accept that someone as young, energetic and passionate as herself could be having a stroke. However, the doctors and nurses at Henry Mayo recognized the signs immediately and provided the lifesaving treatment she needed. The emergency physician even remarked that he could only help if you let us triage, instead of staying at home hoping for the best. The personalized care, the comfortable and private room in the beautiful patient tower, and the support from the medical team played a pivotal role in her full recovery. Today, Kathy is back to doing what she loves most—capturing smiles and spreading joy through her photo booth. But now, her work has an even deeper meaning.
As a way of giving back to the hospital that saved her life, Kathy generously donates her services to numerous foundation and hospital events. Her experience has made her an advocate for stroke awareness, particularly among women. Kathy urges everyone to learn about the symptoms of a stroke and the importance of early detection. She shares her story not just to express gratitude but to remind us all that taking care of our health should never be an afterthought. By spreading awareness and encouraging preventive measures, Kathy hopes to ensure that others can recognize the warning signs early and seek the help they need—just as she did.
